How Laser Hair Removal Works
Laser hair removal is different from other hair removal techniques like electrolysis and waxing. The first major difference is that laser hair removal is permanent and many other hair removal services, like waxing, are not. The only other permanent hair removal service, electrolysis, is very slow because only one hair is treated at a time. In laser hair removal, many hairs are treated simultaneously, meaning that your results come much faster because we do not have to treat individual hairs. Waxing, electrolysis, threading and others can be very painful and most never end, meaning you must go back over and over and over again for the treatments because the hair is only temporarily removed. The difference with laser hair removal is that once you go through the program, you do not have to worry about hair re-growth.
Laser hair removal produces permanent results by damaging the small blood vessel that feeds the hair follicle. A hair needs blood flow to grow, so cutting off that blood flow will stop hair growth. Laser treatments cut off blood flow in the following manner. When the laser is fired into the skin, most of the energy is absorbed at the base of the hair follicle where the hair is darkest. When the base of the follicle is heated, it causes damage to the small blood vessel that feeds that hair, cutting off the blood flow and causing permanent hair removal.
 Laser hair removal takes several treatments for two reasons. The first is that it takes multiple treatments to damage the blood vessel enough so that it does nto work any longer. Only when this happens does the hair die. In addition, for laser hair removal to work well, the hair must be in the follicle. There are times in the hair growth cycle where no hair is present in the follicle because it is in the resting phase. At these times, the laser energy does not have an effe3ct on the hair because the target for the laser energy, the base of the living hair, is not present.
During treatment, the laser will be placed on the surface of the skin. A cooling tip at the end of the laser cools the epidermis (outerlayer of the skin). The light energy penetrates through the surface of the skin and is absorbed at the base of the hair follicle. As the laser fires, you will feel a sensation similar to a rubber band being snapped on the skin.
Types of Hair
There are many different types of hair and laser hair removal works a bit different on each. The most important difference is the type of laser used, which is different based on the skin type. The expectations are also often different for different skin types. A medium skinned person with very coarse dark hair will often get better results and require less laser hair removal treatments than a very fair skinned patient with fine, light brown hair because the target for the medium skinned individual is easier for the laser to see than the lighter skinned patient.
Expected Outcomes
Laser hair removal results do vary from patient to patient, and are very dependent on the skin type, the hair type and the type of technology used. 95% our patients achieve between 70% and 95% reduction in the amount of hair after 6-8 treatments. The other 5% of patients do not respond well to laser hair removal techniques and we do not know why. |
